Before I tell you about why I hope to work with you in Developing Personalized Solutions for Your Real Estate Needs, let me share a little bit about how and why WMVY has been a part of my life for longer than I care to admit. In 1987 I decided I needed a break from graduate school and I figured the best break would be a summer on Cape Cod. I'd visited when I was a little kid, but hadn't been there much since, but as someone who grew up in Upstate New York, I treasured the two to three weeks I spent at the beach each summer. I moved to Dennisport, lived on a futon on the screened in porch of a cottage I shared with four other very young men, got a job cooking in a restaurant in Hyannis and had the time of my life. I spent a lot of time driving to and from places and listened to music all the time. I wandered around the dial a bit, but often landed on an eclectic station at 92.7 FM.
I was offered a position to stay on Cape rather than returning to graduate school and spent the fall and early winter in a couple of different rental properties across the Cape. If you know my sister, please don't feed her ego by telling her she was correct when she warned me that I would quickly discover that off-season on Cape was a very different experience from summers on the Cape. I decided to go back to DC and resume graduate school, but I'd fallen in love with the Cape and with this unique radio station from Martha's Vineyard.
A few years later, my parents decided that they would have better luck asking us to visit them in their new beach house in Harwich Port instead of guilting us to go back to Albany and the Cape became the place my family gathered and celebrated occasions from May through September. It also became the place I retreated to with friends for long weekends throughout the year - including some memorable First Nights in Chatham. When I drove up from DC…or anywhere else I happened to be…I would turn the dial on my car radio to 92.7 as I approached Providence and listen to static, then staticky music and ads, as I drove along 195 towards the Cape. When WMVY began to come in clearly, I felt like I had come home.
I'll skip ahead a decade or so to share how I had my first non-visitor experiences visiting Martha's Vineyard to see my good friends from college who had gotten married and I spent time visiting their family's distinctly gingerbread flavored cottage in The Martha's Vineyard Camp Meeting Association - known to most of us as: The Campground! Guess what was on in their house and cars all the time: WMVY! Once or twice a summer I'd visit them there - perfectly natural since we spent lots of time together in DC during the rest of the year. A few years later, I married her sister and The Vineyard joined The Cape as frequent destinations for our leisure time. At the same time, the station had begun to stream its signal so, no matter where we were, on Cape, on the Vineyard or in DC, WMVY was on and it became what we called The Soundtrack Of Our Lives.
My wife decided to take a job in Newport and we relocated - giving us a much shorter commute to our families and their beach houses. One afternoon, I was driving around Newport, top down, flipping through the dial and hoping for something to catch my attention. I landed on a station that played a song that I liked…then another…then another…then, when the DJ came on, I heard "you're listening to 92.7 WMVY." My dial said 96.5, but the station was definitely MVY. Turns out the owner of the company which operated MVY as a commercial station happened to have a home in Newport and arranged to have the over-the-air signal broadcast from a repeater on top of Newport Hospital. MVY, my connection to summers at the beach, became MVY - my everyday, all the time, radio station.
I began to support the station as it started to raise money for On The Road programming and other special initiatives. I watched Joe Gallagher work the sound board at The Narrows, attended MVY sponsored events in Newport, won tickets to shows across the Cape and became completely addicted to MVY. When the 92.7 signal was sold, I joined so many others who loved the station in becoming a member of Friends of mvyradio and began streaming the newly minted internet radio station - with the peculiar benefit of living in Newport where the repeater signal was still available over the air.
When I decided to leave a career I loved working in and around Higher Education and Non-Profits so I could spend more time with my quickly growing children while they still had some interest in spending time with me, I began selling real estate. I was living in Providence at the time and we were soon in the depths of the COVID lockdowns and restrictions. It's not as easy to break into real estate as you'd think, especially when you can't meet people face to face, so I decided to get my name out by doing underwriting support for Rhode Island's NPR station. One day I was driving to Newport for a meeting and listening to PJ Finn talking about the importance of underwriting support in keeping MVYRADIO on the air and decided that I would switch my underwriting from NPR to MVY. As I was talking to the MVY Rep, we started the Newport conversation of who you know and realized we knew each other years earlier through youth soccer and my patronage of a local establishment he had run. He said they were looking for someone to help with underwriting sales in Newport and asked if I would be interested. Many years later, I am still an underwriting supporter of MVY as well as an Account Executive in the Underwriting department. It is easy to sell something you love - especially when you can talk about the success you've had in building your business while supporting the station we all love.
So, here I am today, still working at the radio station on a part-time basis while I continue to build my real estate business.
Now, here is my three-part pitch to you:
Thanks again for being a supporter of MVYRADIO. It is always nice to meet a fellow music lover. Have a great day. I hope to hear from you soon.
